First, let's talk about the music. It is presented as a suite in seven movements. The scope of influences runs very wide: Wagner, Art Zoyd, Tangerine Dream, Pierre Henry, and Einstürzende Neubauten, to name but the most obvious. The album opens with the typical kind of apocalyptic landscapes Art Zoyd and Univers Zero recorded in the 1980s: Carl Orff-like choirs, martial drums, heavy piano, and bleak. Szam Findlay is a Canadian electronic music producer who has been active since 1998. While still a teenager he was signed to Rough Trade Publishing. This release marked the beginning of a longtime collaboration with performance artist Dandilion Wind Opaine who provided the artwork for the booklet. Szam Findlay Die Hautfabrik Review. Released 13 April 2003. The soundworld of Die Hautfabrik conjures Jan Svankmajer's animations: the sound of clockwork automata gaining a frenzied freedom, in particular those automata housed in belltowers and allowed to move only once every hour. The impression conveyed by both the music and of the cover design is that of outsider art but outside of what I don't know, but I think I like it on the outside, it's less claustrophobic, and there's more freedom - though it can be hard to reach think of the travails of Winston Smith or THX1138. Defying categorization, Die Hautfabrik loosely translated as 'Factory Of Flesh' is equal parts Wagner, Vangelis, Autechre and Einsturzende Neubauten, resulting in a compell. Excellent and very varied work with some good transitions (both within and between the pieces). Makes extensive use of various bell sounds in a number of places to good effect. Definitely one for the headphones.

Playing to unsuspecting friends it reminded one of Radiohead's Amnesiac, another of "stuff from the Warp label", then a moment later, they changed their minds :-)
